Early voting starts today in New Orleans and will go through July 4th with the official election being held on July 11th. It’s all of our duties now MORE THAN EVER to get out and vote, but sometimes it can be hard to understand what is even on the ballot and beyond that voting for who best represents your values. The presidential primary election is what we are all expecting to see on the ballot, but beyond that some of us will have the opportunity to vote for First City Court Judge as well as Democratic State Central Committee Members.
What are the other positions on the ballot besides the presidential primary and should I vote on them?
The First City Court Judge is up for re-election in division B in New Orleans so you will be able to vote if you live in Orleans Parish on the East Bank (Uptown, Mid-City, 9th Ward, Gentilly & more). Nadine Ramsey currently holds the position and five new candidates are now on the ballot. A First City Court Judge often handles conflicts for their constituents such as evictions, small claims, tenant landlord disputes, contract disputes, and personal injury claims.
Democratic State Central Committee Members are the governing body for the Democratic Party of Louisiana that has sole responsibility for the affairs of the Louisiana Democratic Party. They help elect Democratic candidates in local, state, and national elections, conduct the Democratic National Committee delegate selection process, promotes and builds the state party, fundraise, conducts research on judicial or executive issues, and maintain voter relations, education, and leadership programs. The Democratic Parish Executive Committees (DPEC) have the general responsibility for Democratic Party affairs at the local level. They are under the jurisdiction of the DSCC and DNC. They are responsible for the endorsement of local candidates, as well as for building Democratic infrastructure within their communities.
Early voting in New Orleans is open at your designated voting place from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. everyday except Sundays. Figure out where to go to vote here.
