Everyone is SO obsessed with pumpkin spice in the fall, that so many of the (possibly better) flavors of the season get overlooked. We love a good PSL, but why aren’t excellent flavor combos like apple and cinnamon getting the attention they deserve?!? Ok, rant done.
It’s apple season, and we are sharing this absolutely delicious and easy apple crisp recipe. An apple a day keeps the doctor away right? Well, this apple crisp has 5!
Ingredients
For the apple filing:
- 4 – 5 granny smith apples depending on their size
- 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter, melted
- 2 tablespoons of flour
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 3 tablespoons of milk
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- dash of salt
For the topping:
- 1/2 cup flour
- 1/2 cup oats
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/3 cup unsalted butter softened – you can also use coconut oil here if you want to cut back on the butter – we did and it was just as good!
- dash of salt
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees, and grease a small baking dish – round or square works. Then, you will need to peel each apple. Start by cutting the tops and bottoms off, and peel them using a vegetable peeler. Cut the sides off to remove the core, and then slice into thin slices.
In a bowl, combine the melted butter and flour until well blended. Once it is blended add all of the additional ingredients for the filling and mix well. Then, add your apples to the bowl and coat with filling.
Pour the apple mixture into the baking dish.
Now, for the topping! Simply add all of the ingredients for the topping to your mixing bowl, and mix them up until a “crumbly” mixture is formed. We suggest, just taking your hands and getting in there to spread out the butter to help make this the correct consistency – similar to when making a shortbread crust.
Once your topping is ready, pour over the apple filling, and spread evenly. You’re ready to bake!
Bake for 30 – 35 minutes until golden brown. Serve with vanilla ice cream and enjoy!
